FORT WORTH, Texas (March 22, 2019)

B.B. Owen Elementary is Lord of the Library once again, going 4-for-4 as top school in 2018-19’s Texas Motor Speedway Speeding To Read. The yearlong education program includes 14 participating Dallas/Fort Worth schools.

B.B. Owen, the Lewisville ISD school based in The Colony, held on to its 100 percent score again, having its entire enrollment of 294 meet or exceed their Turn 4 reading goals. It is the only school in the competition to have a perfect score for the year. Dolores Huerta Elementary in Fort Worth came in second with 96 percent of its 489 students reaching or exceeding their reading goals.

Other schools participating in Turn 4 include: Brent (Little Elm ISD); Carl E. Schluter (Northwest ISD); Carter Park (Fort Worth ISD); Diamond Hill (Fort Worth ISD); Homestead (Lewisville ISD); Price (Mesquite ISD); S.M. Seabourn (Mesquite ISD); Sidney H. Poynter (Crowley ISD); Stewart’s Creek (Lewisville ISD); and Tom C. Gooch (Dallas ISD).

Out of the 5,058 students participating, these 12 schools collectively read 58,060 books in the fourth quarter of the competition. During the four-week scoring period, Diamond Hill read the most with a whopping 15,834 books. Carl E. Schluter also broke the 10,000-book barrier with 10,266.

Diamond Hill first-grader Isabella Leal Sanchez was the star of Turn 4, reading the greatest number of books (348) during Turn 4. Other grade champions include Diamond Hill kindergartener Star Castro (190), Diamond Hill second-grader Melissa Sanchez (147), Homestead third-grader Noelle Prowell (120), Stewart’s Creek fourth-grader Haylee Baker (300), and Carter Park fifth-grader Xavier Huerta (145). Each grade leader will earn a prize pack from Texas Motor Speedway and Speedway Motorsports, Inc. Properties.  

The top classrooms, based off average number of books read per student in the class, were the Carl E. Schluter first-grade class of Ms. Nolting (159 books/student), Diamond Hill fifth-grade class of Mr. Carranza (65.1) and the Homestead kindergarten class of Ms. Sisson (41). For Turn 4, the top-reading classrooms of Ms. Nolting and Mr. Carranza will earn special treats for each student compliments of Levy Restaurants, the official concessionaire of Texas Motor Speedway.
