TRACK REPAVE AND RE-PROFILE UPDATE
FORT WORTH, Texas (Jan. 27, 2017) -- Texas Motor Speedway has been a busy place over the last three weeks.
Crews have been busy preparing the track for its repave and re-profiling over the last three weeks.
The first construction stage has consisted of installing a series drains on the front and backstretches and working on the re-profiling of Turns 1 and 2. The banking in those turns is being reduced by four percent from 24 to 20 degrees.
“The work is right on target with our project,” TMS President Eddie Gossage said. “The drainage system is being installed right now and on February 1 they should start paving. They have begun to change the banking in Turns 1 and 2 and that won’t take long to grade that in and put the fill in place to lower the banking. We are in great shape and are right on schedule to have it all completed around March 1.”
The next stage of the project will see the track and apron repaved while putting the finishing touches on the re-profiling of Turns 1 and 2. The targeted March 1 completion date gives workers about five weeks to “age” the track to be ready for the O’Reilly Auto Parts 500 weekend from April 7-9.
“We will do the things we need to do to “age” the track a little bit artificially,” Gossage said. “You do that with some lime and some devices that we have created to work rubber into the racetrack. Brand new asphalt isn’t ideal for racing and we have learned over the years how to “age” the track. When the drivers get here their cars will work better on it and we will have a better racing product than if they were racing on brand new asphalt.
"We think we have eliminated the reasons and the causes for the weather delays we have had in the past," Gossage added. "I know this is a relief for our fans. For the sport, we want to make sure we can quickly dry the track and get back to racing because that is what everyone is here to see."
