Chase contender Kevin Harvick - 0-for-27 in NASCAR Sprint Cup Series starts at Texas Motor Speedway - topped the speed chart following Friday’s opening practice for the AAA Texas 500.

Harvick toured TMS’ high-banked/1.5-mile quadoval in 27.455-seconds/196.685 mph on the 23rd of his 25 laps in the No. 4 Busch Beer Chevrolet SS fielded by Stewart-Haas Racing to lead a group of four hot-lapping Chasers. Three-time TMS winner Carl Edwards was second-fast at 196.278 mph in his No. 19 Sport Clips Toyota Camry with Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Matt Kenseth third at 195.929 mph in his No. 20 DeWalt Flexvolt Toyota.

Joey Logano of Penske Racing was fourth-fastest at 195.574 mph in the No. 22 AAA Ford Fusion. Among the other Chasers, Kurt Busch of SHR was seventh at 195.051 mph in the No. 41 Haas Automation/Monster Energy Chevrolet;  Denny Hamlin of JGR was 15th at 193.972 mph in the No. 11 FedEx Office Toyota, with teammate and reigning series champion Kyle Busch 22nd at 193.002 in the No. 18 M&M’s Toyota.

Six-time Cup champion Jimmie Johnson, who clinched the first birth in the Championship 4 last weekend with his win at Martinsville Speedway _ was 33rd overall after lapping at 190.705 mph in his No. 48 Lowe’s Chevy SS.

Cup teams will qualify at 5:45 p.m. today.
