O’Reilly Auto Parts 500


Target Chip Ganassi Racing teammates Tony Kanaan and Scott Dixon _ both former champions of the Firestone 600 _ topped the speed chart during the lone practice for Saturday night’s edition of “America’s Original Nighttime IndyCar Series” event.

Kanaan hot-lapped around TMS’ high-banked, 1.5-mile quadoval in 24.1666-seconds and 216.745 mph in his No. 10 NTT Data Chevrolet. Dixon, the defending event champion, trailed slightly with a best lap of 24.1814-seconds and 216.613 mph in the No. 9 TCGR Chevy. Kanaan won this event in 2004.

Marco Andretti of Andretti Autosport led the Honda camp in fifth at 215.903 mph in the No. 27 Snapple car, followed by teammate Carlos Munoz at 215.882 mph in the No. 26 Andretti Autosport entry. Reigning Indianapolis 500 champion Alexander Rossi was seventh, and the fastest rookie, at 215.610 mph n the No. 98 Castrol EDGE Honda fielded by Andretti Herta Autosport with Curb-Agajanian.

The race’s 22 entries ran a combined 754 laps, with rookie Max Chilton recording a session-high 53 laps in his No. 8 Gallagher Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet.

Qualifying for the 248-lap/372-miler is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. (CDT).
