'Speeding To Read' Students Racing Through Turn 3 Of The Clara Love 500

February 03, 2012

Clara Love Elementary School students are racing their way through Turn 3 of the Clara Love 500 – Texas Motor Speedway’s Speeding To Read competition – and the 630 K-5 student body is boasting a total of 56,229 books read.

Texas Motor Speedway staff members visited Clara Love Friday morning to award trophies and prizes to the top two classrooms in the K-2 and 3-5 divisions. Ms. Pollock’s first grade class leads the K-2 division with 5,622 books, while Ms. Standridge’s third grade students lead the 3-5 division with 591 chapter books. In addition to receiving a shiny trophy to display in their classrooms, during the assembly the leading students transformed two teachers into human ice cream sundaes for winning a challenge set by Ms. Abrams and Ms. Baker, who led in Turns 1 and 2.

Students in Ms. Pollock’s and Ms. Standridge’s classes also received a Texas Motor Speedway prize pack and will celebrate their achievements Friday afternoon with a Pit Stop Party.

Students will reach the final turn of the Clara Love 500 during Texas Motor Speedway’s Samsung Mobile 500 week in April. Each student in the leading classrooms at Turn 4 will receive four tickets to the Samsung Mobile 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series night race on April 14.

Speeding To Read is an incentive-based reading program created by Texas Motor Speedway to encourage students to read more frequently during the school year. The student body is split into two divisions – kindergarten through second grade and third through fifth grade – with the classrooms competing against each other to read the most books and earn the title of Speeding To Read champions.

To keep abreast of the competition – which is known as the Clara Love 500 – Texas Motor Speedway had an 8x24-foot animated mural of the world-class motorsports facility produced to hang on Clara Love’s library wall.

Each class received a cut-out template of a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series stock car and designed their own paint scheme as part of the program. The cars move incrementally around the track in relation to the amount of books read by each classroom.

The top-five classrooms in each division and number of books read are listed below.
