Bayne Wins O’Reilly Auto Parts Challenge
November 05, 2011
FORT WORTH, Texas (November 5, 2011) – Trevor Bayne rallied on a
late restart to stun a dominant Carl Edwards and collect his first
career NASCAR Nationwide Series victory in Saturday’s O’Reilly Auto
Parts Challenge before an estimated crowd of 69,500 at Texas Motor
Speedway.
Bayne (No. 16 Roush Fenway Racing Ford), who started 10th, did not become a major factor until the final restart following a caution with seven laps remaining in the 200-lap race. Edwards (No. 60 Fastenal Ford), who led a race-high 157 laps, was in the lead on the restart and his chief competitor had shaped up to be Denny Hamlin (No. 18 Z-Line Designs Toyota).
Hamlin, who replaced the parked Kyle Busch that resulted with him starting from the rear of the 43-car field, was enjoying a tremendous run as he carved through the field throughout the race and found himself situated in second for the restart.
But Bayne, who restarted fourth, gave Edwards a strong push and then sliced past Hamlin to quickly grab second place. He also made fairly quick work of Edwards as Bayne overtook him to lead the final six laps of the race for the win. It was the only laps he led on the day as he held off a charging Hamlin by 0.142 of a second.
The win was the first in the Nationwide Series for Bayne, who won the season-opening Daytona 500 Sprint Cup race in February and had never finished better than third (three times) in this series.
Bayne’s effort transformed Edward’s dominant performance and opportunity for a Nationwide Series season sweep at Texas into a third-place finish.
After polesitter Elliott Sadler (No. 2 OneMain Financial Chevrolet) and Clint Bowyer (No. 33 Rheem Heating & Cooling Chevrolet) shared the lead through the first 21 laps, Edwards, who started eighth, began to take control. He led for a 28-lap stint before losing the lead during green-flag stops, but quickly regained the point on Lap 56 and led 73 of the first 100 laps.
Meanwhile, Hamlin was charging through the field in the early stages and cracked the top 10 just 38 laps into the race. He finally broke into the top five after a restart on Lap 96 and two laps later was in third, trailing only Bowyer and leader Edwards. He got as high as second on that final restart, but was unable to overtake Bayne in those closing laps.
Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (No. 6 Sam’s Club/Cargill Ford) extended his NASCAR Nationwide Series championship lead over Sadler from 15 to 17 points with two races remaining. Stenhouse Jr. was able to open the gap with a sixth-place finish compared to the ninth-place finish by Sadler.
The race weekend concludes Sunday with the AAA Texas 500, the eighth stop in the 10-race Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, beginning at 2 p.m. CT. Frontstretch tickets remain by calling (817) 215-8500 or by visiting
