FOOD FOR THE SOUL BECOMES PARTNER FOR STR POWERED BY FUN 2 DISCOVER

FORT WORTH, Texas (Aug. 22, 2018) –

Food for the Soul, a non-profit, faith-based organization based in Keller, has become a partner of Texas Motor Speedway’s Speeding To Read S.T.E.A.M. Powered by Fun 2 Discover program with a mission of fighting childhood hunger at one of the program’s participating elementary schools for the 2018-19 school year.

Food for the Soul has identified Diamond Hill Elementary School of the Fort Worth ISD as this year’s candidate for its flagship Backpack program. With Diamond Hill having nearly its entire student body of approximately 600 students on the lunch assistance program, Food for the Soul will supplement that program by providing those students with free nutritious meals and snacks for each weekend throughout the entire school year. Without assistance, these children could potentially go 65 hours without food in certain situations.

"We are thrilled to partner with Texas Motor Speedway's Speeding to Read program,” Food for the Soul Founder & Executive Director Kimberly Sawyer said. “Children have a multitude of needs to be successful in today's world, from learning to read to having enough food to eat outside of school hours. When we all work together, every child among us and every community around us can thrive and reach new heights."

Since 2009, the Food for the Soul Backpack Program has provided more than two million free meals and snacks to hungry children in North Texas communities through the generous donations of individuals, businesses, churches, canned food drives and a national grocery supplier. Food for the Soul also was a 2017 grant recipient of Speedway Children’s Charities-Texas Chapter, receiving $25,000 toward the backpack program.

For those individuals or businesses interested in helping fund the students of Diamond Hill Elementary, please visit www.foodforthesoul.org. A $5 donation will feed a child for an entire weekend while $180 will feed a child for the entire academic school year. Food for the Soul will need to raise approximately $108,000 to care for all the students for the entire academic year with its Backpack program.

Diamond Hill is returning for its second year in the Speeding To Read S.T.E.A.M Powered by Fun 2 Discover program. This past school year, Diamond Hill won a school division championship with 92 percent of its student body meeting or exceeding the year-long reading goals. The school also had two individual reading world champions as well as world champion and conference champion classrooms in the competition.

“We are excited to have Food for the Soul join Speeding To Read as a partner and making an impact with the students in another critical area of their young lives,” Texas Motor Speedway Vice President of Media Relations Mike Zizzo said. “Diamond Hill did a tremendous job in their first year in our educational program and I’m pleased to see them earn another benefit for their students as a participant in Speeding To Read.”
