E.P. RAYZOR, B.B. OWEN CO-LEADERS IN FINAL OF SPEEDING TO READ

  • Top Readers To Be Recognized During Championship Assembly May 23 At TMS With 5,000 Local Elementary School Students, Special Guests Tony Kanaan, John Hunter Nemechek 

FORT WORTH, Texas (May 15, 2017) – Two-time defending champion E.P. Rayzor Elementary School and B.B. Owen Elementary School were co-leaders in the fourth and final turn of Texas Motor Speedway’s Speeding To Read program with 100 percent of their respective student bodies meeting or exceeding the reading goals during that period. 

Rayzor, the Lantana-based school in the Denton ISD, and B.B. Owen, The Colony-based school in the Lewisville ISD, also co-shared the Backstretch Division lead for Turn 4 while Justin Elementary of the Northwest ISD led the Frontstretch Division at 95 percent. 

The 10 schools and 5,049 students combined to read 169,407 books during Turn 4 and have read 557,388 books since the competition began in September.

Cox Elementary kindergartener Ellie Evans was the leading Turn 4 individual reader for the Kindergarten-2nd Grade Division with 868 books read while Hargrave third-grader Jayson Washington led the 3rd-5th Grade Division with 545 books read.

The Rayzor Elementary first-grade class of Aleisha Moore was the top KG-2nd classroom for Turn 4 with an average of 417.1 books read per student. The Hargrave third-grade class of Theda Wallace led 3rd-5th with an average of 116.5 books read per student.

Schools representing six of the top 25 school districts in the Metroplex this year are among the 10 schools competing in the Texas Motor Speedway Speeding To Read program that is completing its sixth year. In addition to Rayzor, B.B. Owen and Justin, the schools participating are Brent (Little Elm ISD), Carroll Peak (Fort Worth ISD), Cox (Northwest ISD), Hatfield (Northwest ISD), Hargrave (Crowley ISD), Nathan Adams (Dallas ISD) and Tom C. Gooch (Dallas ISD).

The Speeding To Read champions will be crowned at an all-school assembly Tuesday, May 23, at Texas Motor Speedway with drivers Tony Kanaan of the Verizon IndyCar Series and John Hunter Nemechek of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series serving as special guests. The speedway will recognize the top individuals, classrooms, schools and most improved readers during the ceremony that will be held in the frontstretch grandstands (10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.). 

Texas Motor Speedway also will announce and crown the winners of the NASCAR Acceleration Nation STEM book reading competition that took place during Turn 4.
