BLANEY’S WOOD BROTHERS FORD PACES CUP PRACTICE
FORT WORTH, Texas (November 5, 2016) - Ryan Blaney’s first of 31 hot laps held up as fastest during Saturday morning’s second NASCAR Sprint Cup Series practice for the AAA Texas 500 at Texas Motor Speedway.
A non-Chaser, Blaney toured TMS’ high-banked/1.5-mile quadoval in 28.645-seconds/188.515 mph in the No. 21 Borg Warner Ford fielded by the famed Wood Brothers. Blaney will start Sunday’s 501-mile/334-lapper eighth after qualifying at 191.272 mph Friday afternoon.
AJ Allmendiger was second-fast in the No. 47 Bush’s Chili Beans Chevrolet at 188.508 mph, a speed he turned on the first of his 33 laps.
Penske Racing’s Joey Logano was fastest among the eight Chase contenders in ninth after lapping the No. 22 AAA Ford at 187.026 mph. Logano will start Sunday’s race - Round 8 of the 10-event Chase - second after qualifying Friday at 192.260 mph.
Six-time Cup champion Jimmie Johnson was 16th at 185.810 mph in the No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet. Johnson, of Hendrick Motorsports, earned the first berth in the Championship 4 at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Nov. 20 last Sunday with his victory at Martinsville Speedway. Johnson will start 19th on Sunday.
Chasers and Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Carl Edwards (184.716 mph), Kyle Busch (184.704 mph) and Matt Kenseth (184.175 mph) were 22nd through 24th, respectively, on Saturday’s chart in their Toyota Camrys.
And Chasers Kurt Busch (183.855 mph) and Kevin Harvick (183.761 mph), both of Stewart-Haas Racing, were 29th and 30th.
Pole-sitter Austin Dillon of Richard Childress Racing was 25th in the No. 3 Realtree/Bad Boy Chevy at 184.150 mph.
A final, 50-minute practice is booked for 12:30 p.m. CT.
