LIONEL RACING’S 'DESIGN A DIE-CAST' PROVIDES UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS
- More Than 6,500 Students From 11 Local Elementary Schools To Design Their Own NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Car Paint Schemes In Week-Long Competition
- Winning Designs To Be Replicated By Lionel Racing On Actual 1:24 Scale Die-Cast, Presented To Students During Duck Commander 500 Race Week
FORT WORTH, Texas (February 8, 2016) – More than 6,500 students from 11 area elementary schools competing in Texas Motor Speedway’s Speeding To Read program will showcase their artistic skills beginning today through Lionel Racing’s “Design A Die-Cast” contest.
Lionel Racing, the Official Die-Cast of NASCAR, is offering kindergarten through fifth-grade students in these schools the opportunity to design their own paint scheme for a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series stock car with the winning designs being reproduced on actual 1:24 scale, hood-opening, trunk-opening die-casts.
Winners will be selected in both the K-2nd and 3rd-5th grade divisions and each will have their respective car presented to them in an acrylic case during a school assembly coinciding with April’s Duck Commander 500 NASCAR doubleheader race week at Texas Motor Speedway. The two winners also will receive tickets to the Duck Commander 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race scheduled for Saturday, April 9.
The 11 Texas Motor Speedway Speeding To Read elementary schools that will take part in the Lionel Racing “Design A Die-Cast” contest are Nathan Adams (Dallas ISD), Carroll Peak (Fort Worth), Old Settlers (Lewisville), O.A. Peterson (Northwest), Rockbrook (Lewisville), E.P. Rayzor (Denton), Sendera Ranch (Northwest), Riverside Applied Learning Center (Fort Worth), Samuel Beck (Northwest), Northbrook (Eagle Mountain-Saginaw) and J.A. Hargrave (Crowley).
Lionel Racing initially partnered the “Design A Die-Cast” contest with Texas Motor Speedway’s Speeding To Read program last year, where Carroll Peak fifth-grader America Perez (pictured) won the overall honors that included a special visit by 2014 NASCAR XFINITY Series champion Chase Elliott to her Fort Worth school. Northwest ISD’s Nance Elementary first-grader Tristan Beal won the K-2 competition.
“We were blown away by the creative paint schemes that America and Tristan designed last year,” Lionel Racing Vice President of Marketing and Communications Michelle Fannin said. “We’re excited to be partnering with our friends at Texas Motor Speedway again and we’re looking forward to seeing what the students in Dallas/Fort Worth create for this year’s ‘Design a Die-Cast’ contest.”
Beginning today through Feb. 15, students produce their design on a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series car template sheet that consists of side and overhead views of the stock car. Each school will vote on and submit their top design in grade categories K-2 and 3-5 to Texas Motor Speedway, where speedway officials, Lionel Racing and NASCAR will determine the winners.
The designs will be judged on originality, incorporating reading and/or school elements into the design, and having an orderly appearance that can be transferred to an authentic die-cast.

About Speeding To Read: The mission of Texas Motor Speedway's Speeding To Read program is to utilize motorsports, its drivers and races to incentivize elementary school children to read more frequently and enrich their educational experience and future.
