FORT WORTH, Texas (Oct. 31, 2014) – Michael Waltrip Racing driver Brian Vickers recorded the fastest lap during Friday’s opening NASCAR Sprint Cup Series practice session for the AAA Texas 500 at Texas Motor Speedway.
Vickers (No. 55 Aaron’s Dream Machine Toyota) ran a lap of 199.218 miles per hour to top the 43 cars that participated in the 90-minute session. That lap was faster than the current Sprint Cup qualifying record at Texas Motor Speedway of 198.282 mph set by Kevin Harvick at April’s Duck Commander 500.
Harvick (No. 4 Budweiser Chevrolet) was second at 198.990 mph and Tony Stewart (No. 14 Bass Pro Shops/Mobil 1 Chevrolet) was third at 198.866 mph.
Other Eliminator 8 Chase drivers in addition to Harvick were Jeff Gordon (No. 24 Drive To End Hunger Chevrolet) ranked fifth at 198.581 mph; Carl Edwards (No. 99 Aflac Ford) seventh at 197.954 mph; Denny Hamlin (No. 11 FedEx Office Toyota) at 197.390; Joey Logano (No. 22 AAA Insurance Ford) 20th at 196.492 mph; Ryan Newman (No. 31 Caterpillar Chevrolet) 23rd at 196.285 mph; Brad Keselowski (No. 2 Miller Lite Ford) 24th at 196.192; and Matt Kenseth (No. 20 Dollar General Toyota) 26th at 195.936 mph.
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series returns to the track at 5:40 p.m. CT today for the Pinnacle Propane Qualifying Days, where the knock-out format will determine the 43-car starting line-up for Sunday’s AAA Texas 500. The series will have two final practice sessions Saturday, the first at 10 a.m. and the second at 1 p.m.
