FORT WORTH, Texas (April 4, 2014) – Six-time defending NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson posted the fastest lap in Friday’s opening NASCAR Sprint Cup Series practice for the Duck Commander 500 at Texas Motor Speedway.
Johnson (No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet) ran a top lap of 193.237 miles per hour to lead five Chevrolet drivers among the top seven fastest laps in the 1-hour, 50-minute practice session. Greg Biffle (No. 16 3M/Give Kids A Smile Ford) was the only other manufacturer to break into the top four as he had the second-fastest lap at 192.055 mph.
Biffle was followed by Ryan Newman (No. 31 Caterpillar Chevrolet) at 191.564 mph, Dale Earnhardt Jr. (No. 88 National Guard Chevrolet) at 191.327 mph and Brian Vickers (No. 55 Aaron’s Dream Machine Toyota) at 190.934 mph. Jamie McMurray (No. 1 Bell Helicopter Chevrolet) and Kurt Busch (No. 41 Haas Automation Chevrolet), respectively, were the other two Chevys to round out the top seven.
Busch, however, appeared to have a tire issue on the backstretch near the close of the session that sent his car into the Turn 3 wall and was towed to the garage.
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series returns to the track at 9:30 a.m. CT Saturday for a final 90-minute practice. The SportsDay Qualifying Day Powered by The Dallas Morning News for the Duck Commander 500 will begin at 2:10 p.m.
