FORT WORTH, Texas (March 7, 2014) - The Port-A-Cool Texas World Dirt Track Championship got underway just after 5 p.m. on Friday evening with plenty of action from the limited modified and modified divisions. With half of the two-day dirt event in the books, seven spots are locked in for the limited modified championship race on Saturday evening and eight spots for the modified championship.
After completely dominating in his opening limited modified heat race, Dennie Gieber of Frankston, Texas, earned the top starting position in Friday evening’s A Qualifier. With plenty of action in the back of the field as Triston Dycus (Waxachie, Texas), Shane Hebert (Lafayette, La.) and Bo Day (Greenville, Texas) fought for the seventh and final transfer spot, no one had anything for Gieber. Heading into Saturday’s action, all signs point to the two-time Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track champion as the one to beat.
In similar fashion to Gieber, Mansfield native and 2011 champion Sean Jones earned the top starting position in the modified A Qualifier. He never relinquished the lead as he cruised to the finish locking up a spot in Saturday’s modified championship event.
A few spots back from Jones, the modified division A Qualifier saw an intense finish as two former Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track champions fought for the eighth and final transfer spot. After a late caution, two laps remained for John Whittington (Vidor, Texas) to get past Sunnyville’s Clyde Dunn Jr. After starting in 17th, Whittington fought his way into position so that he could dive inside Dunn Jr. through turns 3 and 4 on the final lap to steal the last transfer spot into Saturday’s modified championship.
Saturday’s action gets underway with hot laps at 5:30 p.m. Opening ceremonies are set for 6 p.m. with a full slate of limited modified, modified and SUPR Late Model action, including championship races in each of the three divisions.
