Norman Cleghorn, a resident of Palestine, Texas, was treated to a unique experience on Saturday, November 2. Cleghorn won a “Money Can’t Buy It” experience. A promotional contest that ran for thirty eight weeks for Season Ticket Holders at Texas Motor Speedway. Cleghorn got to wave the flag during the NASCAR Nationwide series Pinnacle Propane Qualifying.
Cleghorn has attended every NASCAR event since Texas Motor Speedway opened in 1997 and after the first few years bought Season Tickets and a Camping Spot. “When I was picked to wave the flags for Nationwide Qualifying, it was so exciting. This was such a great experience to be up there waving the flag, seeing the cars come out of turn four right down the front stretch at full speed right under me was just too cool” Cleghorn exclaimed.
Cleghorn said this year’s events have been extra hard on him because this is something that he, his wife, and son did together as a family for a number of years until his wife's battle with lupus got to be too much for her to attend the last few years. “She wanted to attend the November race but, she was not doing well with her illness and then suddenly lost her battle the next month and passed away.”
Cleghorn said that he and his son debated about going to the April race in 2012 but said that it was their time to spend together. “My wife knew how much we enjoyed it, so we went ahead and went.” “I wore her Ryan Newman hat in her honor that weekend and we did our best to have some fun.”
Cleghorn and his family have enjoyed over 16 years of races and camping with friends and family and are looking forward to many more years.
“Thank you Texas Motor speedway, for giving me a special race memory for me to look back on for years to come” Cleghorn said.
