NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Driver gets BBQ 101 and tells stories on his sister at Hard Eight in Roanoke, Texas
Dale Earnhardt Jr. made a pit stop in Roanoke, Texas, earlier this month to cook up some tasty BBQ and get cozy with a few lucky fans.
Earnhardt Jr. gets an up close look at how Texans cook up our mouth-watering BBQ from grill master and Owner and President of Hard Eight BBQ, Chad Decker.
Earnhardt Jr., who is passionate about grilling when he’s not behind the wheel of his No. 88 Chevrolet, learned a lot about the different techniques and temperatures of how to cook smoked meats. “Everybody has different recipes and cooks at a different temperature. Some guys like it low and slow and some like high and fast.” Earnhardt Jr. uses all fruit wood when he cooks and said he wanted to try the mesquite wood.
Earnhardt Jr. has a dirt track on his property and a couple of go kart tracks with 18 go- carts. “Once a year I invite all the guys over to race all night. I choreograph all the races and then I sit back and watch. It’s so much fun.”
“It’s all the JR & Hendrick guys and their mechanics so they never get to race so they're all out there racing each other.” Earnhardt Jr. said. “We feed them all the food and beer and it’s a blast. One year we let the girlfriends and wives have a powder puff race. Most of these people hadn’t met each other before and they aren’t ever in the same place at the same time so they never get to meet each other. All the men are standing there watching them race and some are being slow and having fun and some taking it seriously. The race ends and I notice one of the go-carts was flipped over and I thought well someone got screwed up and then I see my sister crawl out from under it. She comes running across the infield and she’s coming after one of them! Apparently one of the wives spun Kelly out and made her flip because of something that Kelly did during the race. We had to keep them away from each other the rest of the night. We talk about that all the time because it was so funny. We’ve never flipped one since but we’ve never had a power puff race since either.”
