  • Edwards says, ‘No contract yet,’ but that doesn’t mean no decision

    07/29/2011
By Reid SpencerSporting News NASCAR Wire Service (July 29, 2011) INDIANAPOLIS—“I have signed a contract,” Carl Edwards said, and those within earshot at Indianapolis Motor Speedway leaned closer, much like a scene in one of the old E.F. Hutton commercials. “And that’s the contract I signed in 2008 to race for Jack (Roush) in ’09, ’10 and ’11 and try to win the championship, so that is my mission,” Edwards continued. “That’s the only contract that I have signed right now and that’s the one that I’m going honor, so that’s what I’m doing.” Accordingly, NASCAR racing’s marquee free agent is still a free agent for the time being, despite persistent rumors that place him in the No. 20 Home Depot Toyota at Joe Gibbs Racing, with current No. 20 car driver Joey Logano moving to a fourth JGR car. What was obvious in Edwards’ answers to reporters’ questions Friday at Indy, however, was the change in language from earlier responses. In the final year of his three-year deal with Roush Fenway Racing, Edwards had been saying he hasn’t made a decision yet. He didn’t say that Friday. “I’d rather not say,” Edwards responded when asked point-blank if he had decided where he’d drive next year. “I’m not purposely withholding anything, other than to just be able to get the business side of everything done. When I’m able to talk about next season, if it’s appropriate, I will talk about it, and I’ll tell you guys.” There have been clues that suggest Edwards may be headed for Gibbs. At Michigan, Edwards talked in a conciliatory way about JGR driver Kyle Busch, with whom Edwards has had issues in the past—most recently at Phoenix in February. At Indy, Busch and teammate Denny Hamlin were equally full of happy talk. “If Carl came over to Gibbs, certainly it would be beneficial,” Busch said, “because he’s really good at what he does, he’s got great communication, he’s got good feedback, and he’s been one of the top three or four guys in the sport every year he’s been around, or every year that Roush has had good stuff and they’ve been competitive.” Hamlin’s response was strikingly similar. “I think it would be good for our team,” Hamlin told Sporting News. “I think that the dynamic of the three drivers that we already have is good. Having a guy that has already contended for championships and wins on a weekly basis can’t be a bad thing.” From the sound of it, the welcome mat is already in place.

  • Lambert replaces Berrier as Burton’s crew chief

    07/25/2011
By Reid SpencerSporting News NASCAR Wire Service (July 25, 2011) With driver Jeff Burton mired in a 96-race winless slump, Luke Lambert has replaced Todd Berrier as crew chief on Burton’s No. 31 Chevrolet, on an interim basis, in a move announced Monday by Richard Childress Racing. Burton hasn’t won a NASCAR Sprint Cup race since Oct. 11, 2008, and currently is 25th in the series standings through 19 races. Burton qualified for the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup four of the past five years, including last year. Team owner Richard Childress said Berrier would remain with RCR, where he has worked since 1994. “Todd has been an important part of RCR’s success for many years,” Childress said. “He is still employed and under contract, and his role with RCR will be determined in the near future.” Lambert will get his first experience as a Cup crew chief on the job. A 2005 graduate of North Carolina State, Lambert, 28, has been a team engineer with the No. 31 car since 2008. “I'm honored that Richard and Jeff have the confidence in me to lead the team,” Lambert said. “This is a talented group of guys who know what it takes and have been successful, so there's no reason to think we can't be successful moving forward.” Burton, 44, hasn’t had a top-10 finish since last October and is the only driver in the top 30 of the Cup standings without one. He has 21 career wins, tied for 30th on the all-time list.

  • Kevin and DeLana Harvick find novel ways to enrich children’s lives

    07/12/2011
By Reid SpencerSporting News NASCAR Wire Service (July 12, 2011) SPARTA, Ky.—The baseball game was five days away, and DeLana Harvick already was throwing down the gauntlet. As she stood in the No. 33 KHI transporter last Friday at Kentucky Speedway, Harvick was talking some good-natured trash about her husband and Sprint Cup driver Kevin Harvick as a prelude to a charity event scheduled in conjunction with Wednesday’s Eastern League All-Star Game in Manchester, N.H. In addition to bringing 50 Boys and Girls Club members to the game, the Harvicks will compete in a home run derby. DeLana may have an advantage when it comes to prowess on the diamond. “I actually played church league softball years and years ago,” DeLana told Sporting News. “Kevin’s really lucky he’s good on the racetrack, because I’ve seen him swing a bat before, and it’s not pretty. “We’re actually on competing teams for this home run derby. Some of the kids are on my team, and I think (Fox and TNT pit reporter) Matt Yocum’s on Kevin’s team. It’s a toss-up. I honestly don’t know who’s going to win this.” As part of the event hosted by longtime Kevin Harvick Inc. sponsor Rheem and The Kevin Harvick Foundation, Kevin will drive a show car around the warning track and throw out the first pitch. “He’s actually done the Yankees first pitch before, back in 2001, and he actually got it across the plate,” DeLana said. “I think he’s scheduled to go up in another week or two to do that again as well. He’s a big Yankees fan.” Rheem and the foundation also have provided tickets to members of the Boys and Girls Club of Manchester for Saturday’s Nationwide Series race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon. The all-star game and the race are part of a broader foundation initiative that focuses on children. The Harvick’s don’t have children of their own, and neither came from money, but they have earned success in racing—Kevin as a driver at stock car racing’s highest level, DeLana as a driving force behind the Camping World Truck Series and Nationwide teams they own and manage. “Kevin and I realize how fortunate we are, and we realize the big impact that a lot of people had on our lives when we were younger, so the focus of the foundation is to positively enrich the lives of children,” DeLana said. In association with Kevin’s former Cup sponsor Shell/Pennzoil, the Harvicks provided educational opportunities and at-track experiences to disadvantaged children. Even though Shell has moved on, to be replaced by Budweiser on the hood of the No. 29 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet, the Kevin’s Krew program has continued under the aegis of the foundation’s Chase Your Dream scholarships. Children submit essays to compete for $500 stipends to pursue activities outside typical classroom curriculum. “They may want to take dance lessons or sign language lessons, things like that that they might not be able to do,” DeLana said. “That allows them to continue to pursue their dreams, and that’s important to us.”
