  • Top 5 And 5 To Watch At Fontana

    02/18/2010
Top 5 and 5 to watch: Fontana By Bill MarxSporting News NASCAR Wire Service (February 18, 2010) Here’s a look at the top five drivers and five to watch in Sunday’s Auto Club 500. All statistical references are for Sprint Cup races at Auto Club Speedway unless otherwise indicated. Driver rating is based on the past 10 races at the track. 1. Jamie McMurray, 69.8 driver rating. McMurray has made so many media appearances from New York to California, you have to wonder if he’ll have anything left in his tank on Sunday. His record at Fontana is interesting. In his first five races, all with Chip Ganassi, McMurray had four top 10s. In his next eight races, all with Jack Roush, he had one top 10. Guess what? McMurray is back with Ganassi. 2. Dale Earnhardt Jr., 74.3. Junior finished in the top 10 in consecutive races once last year—in August (Michigan and Bristol). Can he do it in the first two races? Tough call. He has more DNFs (five) than top 10s (four) in 16 starts.  3. Greg Biffle, 99.8. Biffle has one win and four top fives in 14 starts. It would have been two wins if his engine hadn’t died after he led 168 of the first 229 laps four years ago. Two of his top fives have come in the past three races. 4. Clint Bowyer, 83.3. Bowyer has never finished worse than 20th in eight starts. He has four top 10s, including ninth last fall. Although he runs near the front, he has led two laps of the 1,999 he has run at the track. 5. Kevin Harvick, 89.0. Harvick hasn’t fared too well at his “home” track (he’s from Bakersfield, Calif.) with five top 10s in 15 starts. But three of them have come in the past four races. 5 to watch 8. Matt Kenseth, 109.7. Kenseth won this race last year and then disappeared. On Wednesday it was announced that Todd Parrott was replacing Drew Blickensderfer as Kenseth’s crew chief. Guess what the No. 1 topic will be this weekend. Kenseth has three wins, seven top fives and 11 top 10s in 16 starts at Fontana, so Parrott is walking into a good situation. At least this week. 9. Juan Pablo Montoya, 78.4. After an average finish of 24.8 in his first four starts at the track, Montoya finished 11th and third last year. Call this “The Oval Watch.” This might be the weekend he gets his first NASCAR win on an oval. 13. Kyle Busch, 102.9. Busch finished 24th in October to snap a streak of eight consecutive top 10s, including his first Cup win in 2005. After being a nonentity last week at Daytona, Busch will be hungry. 26. Jeff Gordon, 100.3. All 10 of Gordon’s top 10s in 19 starts are top fives, including three wins. Five of those top fives have come in the past seven races. He finished second in each race last year.  35. Jimmie Johnson, 122.3. Johnson has the best driver rating and should bounce back after last week’s DNF at Daytona. He holds the track record for wins (four), laps led (723) and average finish (5.8). In 14 starts, his worst finish is 16th (twice). In his past six starts, he has three wins and an average finish of 2.8.
