  • NASCAR Announces Sweeping Changes To Qualifying Formats

    NASCAR drivers won't be flying solo anymore. Sweeping changes to the time-trial formats in NASCAR's top three touring series will eliminate single-car qualifying in all but two cases -- the Daytona 500 and the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race on dirt at Eldora Speedway. All other events in the NASCAR Sprint Cup, NASCAR Nationwide and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series will feature timed sessions of knockout qualifying, with the number of sessions depending on the length of the track, NASCAR announced Wednesday.

    Every offseason race fans see driver shakeups and new storylines to look forward to in the upcoming year. Typically, just one or two are of significance but 2014 will be quite different. In 2012, Danica Patrick was making the full-time move from INDYCAR to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series with Stewart-Haas Racing.   • Devastating Duo

    There have been some incredible driver/crew chief teams in NASCAR history. The 70’s were dominated by Richard Petty and his first cousin Dale Inman, who won seven Winston Cup titles together. Dale Earnhardt also won seven championships and four of those came in the late 80’s and early 90’s with Kirk Shelmerdine on top of the pit box. Jeff Gordon and Ray Evernham won three championships in the mid-late 90’s, but this decade and arguably ever the most devastating driver/crew chief duo is Jimmie Johnson and Chad Knaus. Johnson and Knaus locked up their sixth Sprint Cup Series titles in the last eight years this past Sunday and Homestead, Fla., and now sit just one championship behind two of the biggest legends in the sport.
