FORT WORTH, Texas (June 7, 2013) – Andretti Autosport driver Marco Andretti posted the fastest lap as Chevrolet owned four of the top five laps during Friday’s IZOD IndyCar Series opening practice for the Firestone 550 at Texas Motor Speedway.
Andretti ran a fast lap of 217.950 miles per hour (24.0330 seconds) in the No. 25 RC Cola Chevrolet to pace the 24-car field in the opening 75-minute practice session.
Chevy swept the top three laps as reigning Indy 500 champion Tony Kanaan (No. 11 Sunoco/Turbo KV Racing Technology Chevrolet) was second quickest at 217.577 mph and Will Power (No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet) third at 216.938 mph.
Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s James Jakes (No. 16 Acorn Stairlifts Honda) was the top Honda as he was fourth fastest at 216.825 mph. Simona De Silvestro (No. 78 Nuclear Energy Areva KVRT Chevrolet), Kanaan’s teammate, closed out the top five with a lap of 216.758 mph.
Other notables were four-time IZOD IndyCar Series champion Dario Franchitti in eighth, Ryan Hunter-Reay in 13th and three-time Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves in 15th.
The IZOD IndyCar Series competitors return to the track at 3:30 p.m. CT for Firestone 550 pole qualifying.
