FORT WORTH, Texas (June 3, 2013) – Renowned sports artist David Arrigo has designed the Texas Motor Speedway Pole Award Helmets that will be presented to the pole winners of this week’s IZOD IndyCar Series Firestone 550 and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series WinStar World Casino 400.
Both Simpson racing helmets, designed to showcase Texas Motor Speedway’s “No Limits Wild Asphalt Circus” theme, feature a female fire breather blowing a flame that creates an Indy car and truck on the respective series helmet, clown silhouettes on unicycles and the “No Limits Wild Asphalt Circus” and event logos. The helmet also carries a portion of a red, white and blue traditional racing stripe down the middle for a contrast to the circus art and tie to the speedway’s corporate logo colors.
“I wanted a design that truly embodied the ‘Wild Asphalt Circus’ because the speedway’s theme is unique and it also opens up a lot of intriguing ideas for an artist,” Arrigo said. “I think I achieved that in many respects and I’m hopeful that the helmet becomes a distinctive piece for the pole sitter’s trophy room.”
Arrigo, of Toronto, has produced a variety of work for such major sporting events as the Olympics, Super Bowl, Daytona 500, Coca-Cola 600, tennis’ U.S. Open, Major League Baseball All-Star Game and National Hockey League All-Star Game as well as for major athletes such as Wayne Gretzky, Jimmie Johnson, Sidney Crosby, Troy Aikman and Roger Staubach.
Arrigo also has done some previous work at Texas Motor Speedway. He painted a live mural on the speedway’s giant marquee replicating Danica Patrick on the Sports Illustrated cover in 2005 and the following year he produced a special helmet and book cover that commemorated the speedway’s 10-year anniversary.
Pole qualifying for the WinStar World Casino 400 will be held Thursday, beginning at 6 p.m. CT, and followed by Firestone 550 qualifying on Friday, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
Tickets for qualifying as well as Friday evening’s WinStar World Casino 400 (8 p.m. CT) and Saturday night’s Firestone 550 (7:30 p.m. CT) are available through the speedway’s ticket office at (817) 215-8500 or by visiting www.texasmotorspeedway.com.
