Rookie Bowman Starts on Pole for O’Reilly Auto Parts 300

by TMS Media Relations | Apr 12, 2013

FORT WORTH, Texas (April 12, 2013) – NASCAR Nationwide Series rookie Alex Bowman earned his first career pole in just his 10th career start during SportsDay Qualifying Day Powered by The Dallas Morning News. Bowman (No. 99 SchoolTipLine.com Toyota) posted the fastest lap of the 45 drivers with a qualifying speed of 183.418 miles per hour for tonight’s O’Reilly Auto Parts 300, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CT.

Bowman, 19 from Tucson, Ariz., becomes just the third rookie driver to qualify on the pole at Texas Motor Speedway. He joins David Ragan (2007 O’Reilly 300) and Kyle Busch (2004 O’Reilly 300) as the only drivers to accomplish the feat.

“It means a lot, everybody at the shop does a great job,” Bowman said. “RAB Racing is a heck of an underrated race team, all the support we get from Toyota. Chris Rice (crew chief) does a great job, it all counts. Feels real good to get SchoolTipLine that first week. We said we were going to end up in Victory Lane so we did it at least part of the way, so we have got to end up there later too.”

Bowman edged out five-time Texas Motor Speedway winner Kyle Busch (No. 54 Monster Energy Toyota), who held the top spot with a speed of 183.187 miles per hour before being knocked off.

Richard Childress Racing driver Austin Dillon (No. 3 AdvoCare Chevrolet) qualified third with a speed of 183.156 miles per hour, followed by NASCAR Nationwide Series points leader Sam Hornish Jr. (No. 12 Alliance Truck Parts Ford) and Brad Keselowski (No. 22 Discount Tire Ford) to round out the top five.

Regan Smith (No. 7 TaxSlayer.com Chevrolet), who was fastest in both Nationwide Series practices, qualified sixth. Five-time Nationwide Series winner Kevin Harvick (No. 33 Hunt Brothers Chevrolet) starts seventh and fan-favorite Dale Earnhardt Jr. (No. 88 Hellmann’s Chevrolet) starts 11th.
