ELEVEN PREVIOUS CHAMPIONS SET TO RETURN FOR THIS WEEKEND’S PORT-A-COOL ® TEXAS WORLD DIRT TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP AT TEXAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY

by TMS Media Relations | Feb 27, 2013
FORT WORTH, Texas (Feb. 27, 2013) - The Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track will host one of the most accomplished fields for the Port-A-Cool ® Texas World Dirt Track Championship this weekend as 11 former Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track champions that have combined for 20 crowns will be kicking up dirt in the O’Reilly Auto Parts SUPR Late Model, Modified, and Limited Modified divisions.

One of those returning champions who also will be defending a title is two-time Limited Modified Port-A-Cool ® Texas World Dirt Track champion Dennie Gieber. Gieber captured the Limited Modified title in this event last year, adding to his first TMS dirt track championship in 2003. Gieber will have to contend with the most decorated champion among the group, local favorite and three-time Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track champion Troy Taylor. Taylor, of Midlothian, Texas, became the first driver in Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track history to win three division titles when he won the modified championship in the fall of 2011. His other wins came in the fall of 2007 (IMCA) and again in 2010 (Modified).

Featured in the Modified division will be Clyde Dunn Jr., the 2012 USRA Modified National runner-up and a two-time Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track champion. Dunn Jr., better known to his fans as “Little Freaky,” will have his work cut out for him with fellow two-time champion Steve Whiteaker, Jr. Whiteaker Jr. is chasing his first title in the Port-A-Cool ® Texas World Dirt Track Championship as both his titles have come in the fall event (2010, ’12) at the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track. Whiteaker Jr. also will be racing for a championship in the Limited Modified and SUPR Late Model divisions.

Chris Brown also will compete in the Modified and SUPR Late Model divisions. Brown, a native of Spring, Texas, won the championship at the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track this past November and nearly walked away with the championship last March.  Brown crossed the finish line first in the Modified division of the Port-A-Cool ® Texas World Dirt Track Championship, but his car failed the post-race technical inspection and the title was awarded to Kelly Shryock.  Brown, always in the hunt at the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track, surely will be out to redeem himself this weekend.

“We’re really excited about this weekend,” Brown said.  “More big names are drawn each year because Texas is a premier dirt track event.  We’re happy to have had some success there in the past and we hope to repeat, but it’s going to be real difficult with the tougher competition.”

Headlining the O’Reilly Auto Parts SUPR Late Model division will be Texas native Morgan Bagley, a former SUPR Series Rookie of the Year and series champion. Bagley, a 27-year-old native of Longview, is competing for rookie-of-the-year honors in the World of Outlaws, but has targeted select marquee events such the Port-A-Cool ® Texas World Dirt Track Championship when his primary schedule permits. It’s been an impressive start to 2013 for Bagley after finishing second in the $10,000-to-win at the Winter Extreme in Tucson, Ariz., last month. Working hard to put Texas back on the map in World of Outlaws, Bagley looks to continue his hot start at Texas Motor Speedway.

In addition dirt track action, Texas Motor Speedway will add a unique twist not found at many racing events.  In the grandstands Saturday evening will be 50 students from the Saginaw High School band, who will play music during cautions and other stoppages throughout the evening to offer fans another one-of-a-kind experience at Texas Motor Speedway.

The Port-A-Cool ® Texas World Dirt Track Championship is the first of two dirt track events at Texas Motor Speedway this season. The Port-A-Cool ® U.S. National Dirt Track Championship will be held at Texas Motor Speedway on September 20-21. The Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track is a .4-mile, clay-surfaced track that is known to provide some of the most competitive racing and annually attracts one of the largest entry pools for dirt track events throughout the country.

Gates open for the Port-A-Cool ® Texas World Dirt Track Championship on Friday, beginning at 4 p.m. CT. On-track action begins at 5 p.m. for practice and opening ceremony begin at 7 p.m.  Gates open for Saturday's action at 4 p.m. and racing begins at 7 p.m. to determine the divisional champions.

Grandstand tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under Friday and $20 for adults and $10 for children on Saturday. Event parking is free throughout the weekend.  Fans and competitors can visit www.texasmotorspeedway.com or call (817) 215-8500 for additional information on the Port-A-Cool ® Texas World Dirt Track Championship.
