HARVICK WINS O'REILLY AUTO PARTS CHALLENGE

by TMS Website | Nov 03, 2012

FORT WORTH, Texas (November 3, 2012) -- Kevin Harvick tied the record for most career NASCAR Nationwide Series  wins at Texas Motor Speedway following a dominating victory in Saturday evening's O'Reilly Auto Parts Challenge.

Harvick (No. 33 OneMain Financial Chevrolet) led six times for race-high 127 laps en route to a 1.628-second victory over Ryan Blaney (No. 22 Discount Tire Dodge). It was Harvick's fifth career Nationwide Series win at Texas, which tied him with Kyle Busch for most NNS wins at the speedway.  The victory, his second of the season, was the 39th of his Nationwide Series career, which gave him sole possession of third place all time.

The O'Reilly Auto Parts Challenge also changed the complexion of the Nationwide Series championship. Defending series champ Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (No. 6 NOS Ford), by virtue of his fourth-place finish and an 11th-place effort by Elliott Sadler (No. 2 OneMain Financial Chevrolet, pulled into a championship tie with Sadler with two races remaining. Stenhouse Jr. entered the O'Reilly Auto Parts Challenge trailing Sadler by six.

Busch (No. 54 Monster Energy Toyota) , who started on the pole, appeared from the outset that he could be in position to earn his sixth win at Texas Motor Speedway. He led the first 63 laps, but Harvick stayed within striking distance through most of that run and took the lead on the ensuing lap.

Harvick quickly pulled away from Busch - rolling to more than a one-second lead after three laps out front - and was dominant the remainder of the way. He led all but 10 of the final 137 laps of the 200-lap event and only lost his advantage on pit stop cycles or briefly during a restart late in the race.

Busch overtook Harvick at the start/finish line on Lap 182 following a restart for the fifth and final caution, but he held the point for only a lap as Harvick stormed by once again and cruised to the win. Harvick and Blaney were followed by Busch, Stenhouse Jr. and Denny Hamlin (No. 18 Z Line Designs Toyota), respectively, to round out the top five.

Hamlin and rookie Austin Dillon (No. 3 Advocare Chevrolet) had a dust-up at the conclusion of the race in pit lane. Dillon and Hamlin tangled on the final lap and Hamlin retaliated heading into pit lane by riding Dillon into the wall.
