FORT WORTH, Texas (August 3, 2012) – Texas Motor Speedway’s “2 for $88” ticket special for November’s AAA Texas 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race has been an instant hit with fans, but also has impressed the driver that was foundation of the promotion for becoming the series points leader.
Dale Earnhardt Jr., driver of the No. 88 Diet Mountain Dew/AMP Energy/National Guard Chevrolet, gave kudos to Texas Motor Speedway and its president Eddie Gossage for its AAA Texas 500 frontstretch ticket promotion that was spurred on by NASCAR’s most popular driver gaining the Sprint Cup Series points lead following Sunday’s fourth-place finish at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Why was it reason to celebrate with a ticket promotion? It marked the first time since 2004 that Earnhardt Jr. found himself back atop the points standings.
“Eddie always has a lot of different strings he pulls and I think that’s a classy one,” Earnhardt said during his media availability Friday morning at Pocono Raceway, site of this weekend’s Sprint Cup Series race. “Anything to make the process easier or cheaper for the fan is a great move. I know they’re always trying to work on things to make the experience better for the fans, but to slash the ticket prices is probably at the top of their list. So I think, to me, I feel better about that than just handing a guy $100,000 check. Nothing against that, but cutting ticket prices for everybody or the majority is a pretty cool thing. So I think that’s pretty cool. I thought it was a classy move.”
Earnhardt Jr. alluded to another creative promotion revolving around him where Pocono Raceway President/CEO Brandon Igdalsky has boldly predicted Earnhardt Jr. will win Sunday’s race and if so he will give away $100,000 to a lucky fan.
The Dale Jr. ticket promotion at Texas Motor Speedway has definitely spurred the interest of NASCAR fans wanting to attend the AAA Texas 500, the eighth race of the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup and potentially Earnhardt Jr. contending for his first Cup crown. Since the promotion began this week, ticket sales have increased 142 percent compared to this same period a year ago. The promotion will continue as long as Earnhardt Jr. remains atop of the Sprint Cup points standings while supplies last.
The AAA Texas 500 is set for Sunday, Nov. 4, and is the highlight of a NASCAR tripleheader weekend at Texas Motor Speedway that also includes the Camping World Truck Series WinStar World Casino 350 on Friday, Nov. 2, and Nationwide Series O’Reilly Auto Parts Challenge on Saturday, Nov. 3.
