Dixon ran a lap of 212.371 miles per hour in the No. 9 Target Honda among the 42 he ran during the session. His lap was more than two miles per hour faster than the next closest among the 10 of the 11 drivers that took to the 1.5-mile oval.
For the drivers participating in the test to prepare for the June 9 Firestone 550, it marked the first open test on Texas Motor Speedway's 24-degree banked speedway with the series' new Dallara DW12 chassis, the newly instituted chassis that has provided the cars with a sleek look while improving driver safety.
"I think for the first time coming here, you come open minded to figure out what the car is going to be like so don’t know what to expect," said Dixon, who has a victory and seven top-five finishes in 12 career starts at Texas Motor Speedway. " I’m back to the fact that I think the car has a range of options. I was pleasantly surprised to be honest with you.
"With the rules being open instead of coming here and having rear main plane angles or the rear flaps that just created more of pack racing and people didn’t have the option to separate themselves in different strategies and be fast for 20 laps. Now there are lots of options and now it’s going to be difficult to drive for a whole race, which I think is a good addition and INDYCAR has done good with the options that we have."
Ed Carpenter (No. 20 Fuzzy's Vodka/Ed Carpenter Racing Chevrolet) of Ed Carpenter Racing was second quickest in the session at 210.078 mph and was followed by Charlie Kimball (No. 83 Novo Nordisk Honda) of Novo Nordisk Chip Ganassi Racing at 209.670 mph.
Rounding out the top five were defending IZOD IndyCar Series champion Dario Franchitti (No. 10 Target Honda) at 209.068 mph and Graham Rahal (No. 38 Service Central Honda) of Service Central Chip Ganassi Racing at 208.209 mph, respectively.
Former Formula One star Ruebens Barrichello (No. 8 BMC/Embrase/Hyundai Brazil Chevrolet) , who passed his oval rookie test earlier this morning, was 10th fastest among the 10 drivers running the session as he acclimated himself to the high-banked oval. He posted a lap of 204.772 mph among the 45 he ran for KV Racing Technology in the session.
Kimball ran the most laps of the session at 49 while Franchitti ran the least at 17. A total of 336 laps were run in the session.
The only driver not to participate in the morning session was Wade Cunningham, who is sharing the No. 14 ABC Supply Co./AJ Foyt Racing Honda for AJ Foyt Racing with Mike Conway. Conway ran the morning session and Cunningham was expected to get in the car for the afternoon session.
