Interstate Batteries Car Makes A Splash As It Returns To The Texas Motor Speedway Lake

by TMS Media Relations | Feb 20, 2009

FORT WORTH, Texas (February 20, 2009) – The No. 18 Interstate Batteries car cruised around Texas Motor Speedway today, but it wasn’t on the 1.5-mile track. The newly decaled NASCAR Sprint Cup Series stock car took its original spot back into the middle of the Texas Motor Speedway Lake beside the Indy car and NASCAR truck.

Before sending it off on its voyage, Texas Motor Speedway President Eddie Gossage christened the car by spraying it with a bottle of champagne and proclaiming it the S.S. Interstate Batteries No. 18.

“Back in 2001, we first started floating cars on the lake like they were racing across the water,” Gossage said. “When we first did it a woman was driving on Highway 114 (adjacent to the lake) and called 911 and said a car just went into the lake and it’s floating. It’s obviously attracted a lot of attention over the years. People love it. They always show it on national television during the races and today we are just updating things a little bit with the new decal package and the new wing package.”

The car was returned to the middle of the lake with the help of the TMS Operations Department. The group placed the car onto a float in the water, securely fastening it. The car was then pulled to the middle of the lake with the help of a tow boat.
