Texas Motor Speedway saw some beautiful weather and some great racing this past weekend. Clear skies brought on the heat during the day, but by the time Texas Motor Speedway’s first nighttime NASCAR race events began, the sun was going down and fans were able to enjoy two perfect Texas evenings while cheering on their favorite NASCAR drivers.
On Friday, we saw Carl Edwards first take the O’Reilly Auto Parts 300 pole and then the win, making him only the second Nationwide Series driver to win from the pole at “The Great American Speedway!”™ During the Nationwide Series race, Edwards led 169 of 200 laps and then won by .482 of a second. Definitely a good weekend for Edwards! Both Brad Keselowski, who finished second, and Paul Menard, who finished in third, scored their best finishes this season. Unfortunately, Kyle Busch, who was looking to win his fourth consecutive O’Reilly Auto Parts 300 at Texas Motor Speedway, faced that same bad luck he saw at the beginning of the season when his car was taken out when Tim Schendel blew a tire and crashed into Busch.
Saturday brought out a NASCAR-estimated 168,400 fans to the highly anticipated Samsung Mobile 500, the first-ever night NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race in the 15-year history of Texas Motor Speedway. The race was dominated by Matt Kenseth, who led 169 laps en route to his first Sprint Cup Series victory since the 2009 season at Auto Club Speedway. A 76-winless streak finally broken! Finishing second was Clint Bowyer and third was Carl Edwards, which moved him back up to the No. 1 spot in the Sprint Cup Series standings. NASCAR fans from Texas also got to see one of their own, David Starr, make his first career NASCAR Sprint Cup Series start for newly formed Leavine Fenton Racing. It’s always exciting to cheer on a native Texan here at Texas Motor Speedway! These NASCAR drivers brought race fans an exciting weekend of racing, without a doubt.
