Busch, Harvick In Pursuit Of Historic Win In O'Reilly Challenge

FORT WORTH, Texas (Nov. 3, 2009) – Kyle Busch has been building a pillar of success in the NASCAR Nationwide Series since his debut in 2004.
His accomplishments range from being named Nationwide Series Rookie of the Year and finishing runner-up in the championship that season through last year when he tied the series record held by series legend Sam Ard for most wins in a season (10).
Busch, driver of the No. 18 entry for Joe Gibbs Racing, is looking to enhance that resume again this season as he is closing in on a Nationwide Series championship. He can’t mathematically clinch the title at Saturday’s O’Reilly Challenge at Texas Motor Speedway, but given his success he could further pad his 215-point advantage over second-place Carl Edwards.
Busch has won the past three Nationwide Series races at Texas Motor Speedway and owns the most career top-five finishes (7) of any driver and the second-best career finishing average (6.11).
If Busch can pull off the win, he will add two more records to his bulging list of Texas Motor Speedway accomplishments. He would tie Kevin Harvick for most Nationwide Series victories at Texas Motor Speedway (4) and also tie Brendan Gaughan for most consecutive victories in any major series at “The Great American Speedway!” Gaughan won four consecutive NASCAR Camping World Truck Series races at Texas Motor Speedway during the 2002 and ’03 seasons. He also will move closer to matching Dale Earnhardt’s record of five consecutive Nationwide Series wins at one track (Daytona, 1990-94).
“It would be cool to win four in a row, but we’ve got a lot of competition that’s going to be there,” Busch said of the O’Reilly Challenge. “(Kevin) Harvick’s cars have been really fast at Texas and we’re going to have to battle him. It will be a showcase, that’s for sure.”
Despite his career success at Texas Motor Speedway, a win for Harvick would be monumental since it would be his first at “The Great American Speedway!” driving his own No. 33 Kevin Harvick, Inc. Chevrolet. KHI recorded two wins in the Camping World Truck Series last season when Ron Hornaday Jr. swept both races at Texas Motor Speedway, but Harvick’s four Nationwide Series wins (2001 Jani-King 300, and ’05 , ’06 and ’07 O’Reilly Challenge) have been with Richard Childress Racing entries.
“I have a lot of confidence when it comes to Texas Motor Speedway,” Harvick said. “I have been fortunate to win a lot of races there in my career. For whatever reason, I like that race track. We qualify well there in the Nationwide car and always seem to find a way to finish strong.
“Any time you win a race it is always exciting, but going for a fifth win at the same track is a good feeling. Ernie (Cope, crew chief) and the guys always give me a car that is capable of winning each and every week. Hopefully this time around we can put our No. 33 Chevrolet back into Victory Lane for the third time this season and get Jimmy John’s their second win of the year.”
Busch and Harvick will hit the track Friday with practice at 9 a.m. CT and qualifying later at 5:35 p.m. The O’Reilly Challenge NASCAR Nationwide Series race starts Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Tickets are still available for the O’Reilly Challenge and can be purchased by calling (817) 215-8500 or visiting www.texasmotorspeedway.com
