Roush Fenway Racing driver Colin Braun, the 21-year-old native of Ovalo, Texas, has an affinity for Texas Motor Speedway with it being his home track, but little did he know his third-place finish in June’s WinStar World Casino 400 at “The Great American Speedway!” would be the catalyst for an impressive four-race run that culminated with his first career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series victory.
That TMS finish sparked a streak of four consecutive top-10 finishes that was highlighted by his first career series win coming at Michigan.
Braun, who will compete fulltime in the Nationwide Series next season with Roush Fenway, has already racked up career bests for poles (4), top-five finishes (7) and top-10 finishes (12) to position him fifth in the NCWTS championship. He credits his success to the experience he gained last year during his rookie season.
“Going back to these tracks for the second or third time has given me the opportunity to understand what I need for the truck to be fast at each track,” said Braun, who was named the series rookie of the year in 2008. “I have learned how to race more patiently and to race smarter.”
For Braun, running well at Texas Motor Speedway has become a trend. Last fall he finished fifth – his third career top-five finish at the time – after qualifying ninth.
Braun said family, friends and supporters in the grandstands provide him with all the motivation he needs to run well at his home track. Braun will look to join Terry Labonte as the only Texans to win at “The Great American Speedway!”
“I always like racing at Texas and we typically run really well there,” Braun said. “It’s my home track so that makes it even more special to run well there. We always look forward to racing at Texas.”
