If any driver is due for a win at Texas Motor Speedway, it is Mike Skinner. Skinner’s name is scattered across the TMS record book for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, but his name isn’t etched into the Wall of Champions in Victory Lane yet.
In 11 starts at TMS, Skinner has only finished outside of the top 10 twice – consecutive 11th-place finishes in the summer and fall of 2004. He holds track truck series records for most poles (5), top starting (4.36) and top finishing averages (5.90), and has three runner-up finishes with two of them ranking first and second on TMS’s closest NCWTS finishes (2006 Sam’s Town 400 and 2007 Sam’s Town 400, respectively).
"Texas is definitely one of my top three favorite race tracks on the whole circuit,” Skinner, 52, said. “It’s amazing because I’ve never had a race track where I’ve ran as competitive, led as many laps, sat on as many poles and not won a race. We haven’t walked away with a win yet, but we’re getting close.”
Skinner hopes to join a recent trend in next Friday evening’s WinStar World Casino 350k as two of the past four truck series winners at TMS were veterans that finally earned their first win at “The Great American Speedway!” – 51-year-old Ted Musgrave in the 2007 Chevy Silverado 350k and 50-year-old Ron Hornaday Jr. in the 2008 Sam’s Town 400.
Skinner, the 1995 Camping World Truck Series champion, already has three victories in his first season with Randy Moss Motorsports and is third in points, 326 behind leader Hornaday Jr.
7-Eleven Qualifying for the WinStar World Casino 350k will be held Thursday, Nov. 5, beginning at 7 p.m. CT.
